New Elite Player Development Program Launches and Open Tryout Registration Begins

Dear Washington Youth Soccer Members,

Today we launched our new Elite Player Development program (EPD) – an umbrella program built to create the best avenues of development for our elite players. The EPD, open to boys and girls with birth years 1994-1998, will now be the overarching system used to develop elite players in Washington State and will combine all the programs currently a part of Washington Youth Soccer’s development system, including the Olympic Development Program (ODP), Regional Training Centers (RTCs), State Pool Training, etc.

What the New System Means for Players

With the new program, players will now tryout for the EPD, opposed to the individual programs of ODP, RTC, etc. Once identified as an EPD player, elite athletes will follow a hand-selected combination of the programs under the EPD umbrella based on their age group, developmental needs and capabilities. The new system exponentially increases the opportunities for our elite players and ensures their correct education and matriculation.

Who can be a 2010-2011 Elite Player?

Elite players are those athletes who have been identified by one of the following methods:

  1. Received a recommendation by a club coach or Director Of Coaching (DOC) and was sent an invitation by the state
  2. Was selected to participate in the 2009/2010 ODP State Pool ** These players will be notified that they do not need to tryout by the Washington Youth Soccer Technical Department via email and phone calls by September 5, 2010
  3. Was selected to train at one of the 2009/2010 Regional Training Centers (RTC)
  4. Or attend the 2010/2011 Washington Youth Soccer EPD open tryouts (listed below) in which they are then selected/invited to participate

Tryouts for the Elite program are held each year and are open to all Washington Youth Soccer players. The EPD is a state-run program and athletes participate while still playing in their normal club programs. Further details are included below, and you can find FAQs, tryout registration, and more on the Elite Player Development page under the programs menu on
