U.S. Soccer Visit Keeps Washington Coaches
Ahead of the Curve

By Shannon Murray
Director of Coaching Education, Washington Youth Soccer

Recently, Washington Youth Soccer hosted Dave Chesler and Vince Ganzberg from the U.S. Soccer Coaching Education Technical Department for a two-day workshop that focused on instructor development for the “E” and “D “Licenses, and provided a sneak preview of the upcoming “F” License that is due to be launched in 2015.

Dave and Vince engaged with over 20 technical leaders from around Washington Youth Soccer, both on the field and in the classroom.   The event was a tremendous opportunity to hear directly from our country's driving forces in terms of curriculum development in coaching education.

Getting an opportunity to have Dave and Vince speak and interact directly with our instructional staff was tremendous. Our staff got to listen, learn and ask questions directly to the decision-makers in this area — giving our staff a good understanding of the direction Coaching Education is going.

Education has gone through a large amount of change in the past two years, and is continuing to evolve quickly. Being able to listen directly to the vision that U.S. Soccer has set forth was invaluable and will continue to allow us to be a leader in youth soccer in coaching education.

Be sure to check out the resources available in this issue of Coaches Corner, including James Charette's lesson plan on the principles of defending and the most recent blog from Sam Snow, Director of Coaching for US Youth Soccer, on recreational versus competitive play.

And of course, take advantage of the many coaching courses being offered throughout the state this summer. Just as we expect our players to improve each season, so should we expect the same of ourselves. Find a course in your area and make sure you're up-to-date on the latest coaching trends, to be at your best when your team hits the field again this fall.
