Coaching Workshops Set Direction for 2014

By Shannon Murray
Washington Youth Soccer Director of Coaching Education

After attending workshops in both Bradenton and Philadelphia, the messages being presented by U.S. Soccer are very clear -- coaching education at all levels must continue to be addressed for the game to take a step forward in the United States.  Building off of the Coaching Education Department’s 2013 initiatives of integrating active observations and candidate self-reflections, daily technical interviews, peer reviews, as well as integrating fitness and goalkeeper practicals into the model sessions, Washington Youth Soccer’s 2014 Coaching Education plan will include a focus on:

  • Transforming Coaching Education into a Continuous Learning Pathway:  Providing stepping stones and required specialty modules, continuous education units via U.S. Soccer Coaches Center (USSCC) and multi-phased course strategies.

  • Connecting grassroots development programs with elite player development programs:  Continuous themes through the licensing pathways, age-appropriate content, uniform philosophy methods and terminology.

  • Merging teaching competency with coaching knowledge:  “Teach the teachers,” performance = knowledge + teaching competency, repetitive reinforcement through active observations.

  • Merging coaching theory with reality-based training.

I’m excited about the direction that coaching education is moving at all levels, and for our opportunity to attack these initiatives set by U.S. Soccer in the 2014 calendar year.  Please see our online course schedule for licensing opportunities in your area. We are excited to bring various resources to you in the areas of grassroots soccer, recreational play and special topics sessions.  In addition, feel free to contact me any time to discuss how we can help your club and association coaches to further this great game. See you all on the pitch!
