"F" Course A New, Valuable Resource for Coaches at Youngest Age Groups

by James Charette
Washington Youth Soccer Director of Coaching Education

Washington Youth Soccer hosted a Coach Development Workshop in November for state educational instructors and club technical directors. The workshop emphasized lesson plan development and provided U.S. Soccer National Coaching School updates.

This workshop also provided an opportunity to develop mentors. As pre-course requirements include candidate practice sessions, it is important that we train mentors to support coach development in their respective communities. A mentors list will be posted on the Washington Youth Soccer website in January.

Better prepared 5-8 year old coach = more fun!
U.S. Soccer will launch the “F” License in January 2015. The “F” License is targeted to the coach of the 5-8 year old child. The online license course is just under two hours and will give candidates access to a new U.S. Soccer Coaching Education Platform. Registration information will be posted on the Washington Youth Soccer website.

“F” License course content:

  • 5-8 year old characteristics
  • Coaching Philosophy
  • Parent Guide
  • Laws of the Game
  • How to Teach
  • Creating an Activity
  • Designing a Lesson Plan
  • Whole-Part-Whole
  • Prevention and Care
  • Physical Development
  • Sleep and Nutrition
  • Small-Sided Games
  • Technique
  • Facilitator Games
  • Sample Activities

We are developing the Coaching License Schedule for 2015. If your District, Association or Club is interested in hosting an “F” (field component), “E” or “D” License, contact Bastien Catrin at BastienC@Washingtonyouthsoccer.org.

Coaching Education does not stop at the conclusion of a course. Rather, this is the beginning; we want to provide continued coaching education support throughout your coaching lifecycle. If there are any services that we can provide to support your continued learning at all levels, please let us know.

If you have any questions regarding U.S. Soccer coaching licensing or supporting your coach development, please do not hesitate to contact the Washington Youth Soccer Coaching Education Department.
