Washington Youth Soccer 1999 EPD Boys Win Region IV ODP Championships

Three Washington teams reach finals of elite tourney, 22 players named to all-tournament teams

Four years, seven Region IV ODP crowns — that’s the haul for Washington Youth Soccer and Sounders FC’s Elite Player Development squads after the state’s 1999 boys captured the 2013 Region IV ODP Championships title last month in Las Vegas.

Featuring the top players and teams from the 14 state associations that comprise Region IV — Washington, Alaska, Arizona, California North, California South, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming — the ODP Championships serve as a showcase for the region’s elite young talents. Teams play a round-robin format Friday through Saturday, with the top teams advancing to Sunday’s semifinals, then a final for certain age groups. For other age groups, the team with the most round-robin points is deemed Champion.

In the four years since Washington Youth Soccer and Sounders FC joined forces to create the Elite Player Development program, the tournament has become a showcase of the rapidly increasing talents of our state’s top players. Seven EPD teams have brought home regional titles in that four-year span — second-most among Region IV states — including three last year, and the 1999 boys’ title this year.

Led by first-team all-tournament honorees Chase Fjetland (GK), Oscar Zepeda (D), Thomas Martin (D), Samual Rogers (MF), Bekele Dowty (F), Alex Kirtsov (F), the 1999 boys rolled through the preliminary round unbeaten, including a 1-0 win over regional rival Cal South. That dominance continued in the final, where three goals made short work of fellow finalist Colorado and earned the EPD program its seventh regional crown.

In addition to the 1999 boys, Washington’s 98 boys and 98 girls each reached the final stages, a testament to the depth of the talent pool being developed within our borders.
