Soccer for Success Attends National Training

Soccer for Success is the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s innovative youth development program that uses soccer as a tool to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles for children in low-income urban communities. The Soccer for Success program provides each school three, 90 minute after-school sessions for tw,o twelve-week seasons.

In July, 10 Washington Youth Soccer Soccer for Success coaches spent a weekend at the U.S. Soccer Foundation's National Coaches Training in Washington D.C. In addition to learning valuable skills to use in their programs back home, coaches made connections with over 200-plus Soccer for Success coaches from around the country.

The coaches were unanimous in their praise of the training, and what it will mean for them going forward. They even found inspiration in the city itself!

“The trainers we had were fantastic; their preparation will make all of us better coaches," said Travis Goodlett. "Being able to make new contacts across the USA and hear from people with a variety of experiences is very helpful. The training rejuvenates me, motivates me and prepares me to be a better coach this fall.”

"My experience at the Washington D.C. Training for the U.S. Soccer Foundation was one of the best experiences of my life," said Jonathan Jose.

"It was an amazing experience...I can't remember feeling such positive energy and a prevailing sense of purpose for what we're striving to achieve as mentors and coaches!" said Brian Sallay.

"My experience with the D.C. training is one that will not be forgotten,” said Ben Johnson. “The most powerful presentation came from the CEO. His simple statement that, 'You may not see the changes that you implement with the children,' and that some of the these changes may come five to ten years later, really stuck with me.

“Sometimes, as teachers and adults, we expect or want to see these changes right away, but by being great role models and teachers, we may leave a lasting impression on our students that will change them down the road in their life,” Johnson added. “I found that to be true and very powerful with this Soccer for Success program in mind."
