First-Time Coach? Let Washington Youth Soccer Help!
Age-appropriate training sessions provide coaches videos, printouts to build eight-week training sessions for U6-U12 players
So, you've been asked to coach your child's team this season … now what? Good news — Washington Youth Soccer offers a wealth of online resources, designed especially for coaches like you!
Designed by Technical Adviser Gary White (in gray, above, leading one of Washington Youth Soccer's many coaching clinics) and Darren Sawatzky, the Director of Youth Development for Washington Youth Soccer and Sounders FC, the Age-Appropriate Training Sessions are designed to provide the new coach, or an experienced coach taking over a new age group, with a combination of instructional videos and printable lesson plans that, when combined, create an eight-week training session for teams in the U6, U8, U10 and U12 age groups.
Each week includes four different activities tailored specifically to the needs of the age group listed. Online videos allow coaches to see the training sessions and lessons in action, while printable diagrams allow coaches to bring those same diagrams and lesson plans to the field to put into practice with their own teams.
To get started, visit the Technical Zone at WashingtonYouthSoccer.org and click "Coaching Tools" in the sidebar. In addition to a direct link to the Age-Appropriate Training Sessions, you'll also find links to U.S. Coaching Curriculum, a Coach's Handbook, the Laws of the Game, dates and locations of upcoming coaching education courses, and much more — everything you need to start your season off on the right foot!
