Inaugural Washington Youth Soccer Futsal Cup A Hit With Teams, Coaches
Success of first Futsal Cup drives interest for wintertime event
Washington Youth Soccer held its first-ever Futsal Cup last month at Seattle's Rainier Community Center, the first step towards implementation of a larger statewide futsal program in 2013.
Futsal is played five-on-five on a hard surface (games at Rainier were played on the basketball court), with a smaller, weighted ball that requires players to work together, develop 1v1 footwoork skills and make good passes. Created in South America to help young soccer players build essential skills, futsal has become the official indoor game of FIFA, and is gaining popularity worldwide.
Washington Youth Soccer teams in the U9 through U12 age groups attended the Futsal Cup, competing in a series of fun, fast-paced games. Feedback from coaches and parents alike was unanimously positive following the event:
"I would like to thank the state for putting on the Futsal Cup last weekend, the girls really enjoyed it. My parents would like me to try and start a league in the winter, instead of playing indoor!" - Brian Holloway, Head Coach, WSFC G'00 Red
"Thank you very much. The kids absolutely loved it!" - David Ubaldi, parent
"The Futsal Cup was a blast. Families really enjoyed the competition. It was very well-run in the lead-up and on-site, and the competition level at the U10/U11 was absolutely perfect. Every match was very competitive. Thanks for putting this on. We really hope Washington Youth Soccer does more in futsal in the future!" - Aaron Byers, Coach Development, Mercer Island & Eastside Youth Soccer
Indeed, Washington Youth Soccer will be looking to conduct more futsal programming in the future, particularly in the winter months as an alternative to playing outdoors.
