STATE CUPS, FUTSAL CUP
TAKE CENTER STAGE IN APRIL
Barely a month remains in Washington Youth Soccer's two highest-level State Cup competitions — Challenge Cup and the Washington State Championships. Check the calendar on the main page or at WashingtonYouthSoccer.org for a complete schedule of the action at Starfire, and make plans to come out and watch our state's top young players compete for State Cup titles and the right to represent Washington Youth Soccer at Regional and National Championships!
Of course, Challenge Cup and Washington State Championships aren't the only tournaments crowning champions this month. In addition to those elite events, Washington Youth Soccer is hosting the first-ever Futsal Cup, Apr. 28-29 at Seattle's Rainier Community Center, in advance of a bigger Futsal Cup program in 2013.
Designed to further raise the profile of futsal and provide a developmentally beneficial and fun opportunity for players, the pilot Futsal Cup tournament will be open to boys and girls teams of all levels within the U9, U10 and U11 age groups.
The official indoor soccer game of FIFA, futsal is a five-on-five game played on a hard surface (like a basketball court) with a smaller, less bouncy ball than a traditional soccer ball. The smaller field, reduced team sizes and heavier ball require players to develop greater footwork, 1-v-1 skills and team spacing and passing techniques, instead of relying on long passes.
The tournament will provide a minimum of three games for each team and a final for the top teams in each age group. Rosters of 7-9 players can be formed by either separating your current outdoor team in half, or by simply forming a team of affiliated players. Any player who is not currently a member of Washington Youth Soccer is welcome, but must first register through their local Club or Association.
