TOPSoccer Jamboree Puts Focus on Fun For Local Families
Over 35 players and an additional 35 buddies gathered at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila on Saturday, Dec. 18, for the annual TOPSoccer Jamboree, held in conjunction with the semi-finals and finals of the 2011 Recreational Cup.
The Outreach Program for Soccer (TOPSoccer, for short) is a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, organized by youth soccer association volunteers. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, ages 4-19, who has a mental or physical disability, allowing these players to become a valuable part of the Washington Youth Soccer, and US Youth Soccer, family.
Players from across the Puget Sound region attended last month’s Jamboree, including participants from the Snohomish, Kent, Tacoma, Edmonds and TUSK program. In addition to the players, approximately 35 buddies — children who volunteer to give their time and assistance to the players and program directors — were in attendance, making for an outstanding atmosphere in which all players were able to receive one-on-one time with a buddy, and participate in the many activities presented by organizers.
Players warmed up with a game of Red Light/Green Light, followed by a series of small-sided games on Starfire’s indoor fields. Players also enjoyed playing with a large parachute and taking shots on goal, as well as other activities that guaranteed every player plenty of touches on the ball.
Afterwards, all the players and buddies gathered to enjoy cocoa and cookies provided by parents and Washington Youth Soccer volunteers, and everyone received a goody bag including Recreational Cup scarves, pins, stickers, coupons, erasers, candy, temporary tattoos, pens and a signed photo of Seattle Sounders FC star Nate Sturgis.
