Symposium Scores With Local Coaches
On Aug. 30, the Sounders FC coaching staff — in conjunction with Washington Youth Soccer — held a Coaches Symposium at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila. The Symposium was an opportunity for attendees to observe a training day with the professional team and receive an inside look at how teams are evaluated and scouted.
The Symposium also included a question-and-answer session with the head coach of Sounders FC, Sigi Schmid, providing a unique opportunity for local coaches to learn more about the continued efforts of Washington Youth Soccer and Sounders FC as they reach out to the coaching community in Washington State.
"The 2009 Sounders FC Coaches Symposium was a great success," says Darren Sawatzky, Director of Youth Development for Sounders FC and Washington Youth Soccer. "There were 101 coaches that participated in the event and the feedback has been very positive."
The coaches viewed three modern coaching sessions utilized by Sounders FC plus a lecture on match analysis, then finished with the question-and-answer session with Sigi Schmid. The event provided a full day of coaching, allowing local coaches to interact with, and learn from, each other.
"Superlatives would be the only adjectives to describe our sessions yesterday! A HUGE THANK YOU to the Sounders staff for putting this on," says Susan Cole, one of the coaches in attendance. "I have been coaching youth soccer for 25 years and have a National 'C' license, plus ran varsity high school for three years. I came away from this symposium with, (1) A renewed enthusiasm for coaching in general; (2) Great appreciation for the time and professionalism your staff exhibited; (3) Many ideas to incorporate into my team's training, and; (4) A continued belief that the Sounders are ABSOLUTELY the best professional sports team in America with their ideas on giving back to the community, as well as providing exciting soccer for their fans to watch. I am extremely proud to call myself a Sounders fan for life."
Sounders FC and Washington Youth Soccer are already looking to offer more such opportunities to coaches and the general soccer community in the years to come. Keep visiting wsysa.com for updated information and schedules when they become available!
